xx Dragon hunting (HypnoticDragon)
« Thread started on: Jul 28th, 2017, 09:05am »

It was about an hour before sunset. The sun hung low in the skies, the vast spectre of Lamentation Mountain darkening the plains to its east. It was quiet, a gentle breeze rustling through the grasses the only sound. Soon the birds would be flying to the woods just along the edge of the mountain to roost, along with something quite larger, and it was this creature that the girl, hidden on the edge of the woods, was determined to catch.

Caitlyn Drake could still remember the day the Dragon had come, though it must have been more than ten years ago by now. She had been a young girl when the vast dark shadow of a dragon had blotted out the sun over her home. Her mother had died, her brother had died, everyone in her hometown of Hostar had died, every friend she had ever made, ever face that was remotely familiar blacked out in a few short minutes. Caitlyn herself had only survived because her mother had hurriedly crammed her into a sealed basement room before she had gone to try and find her brother. Caitlyn had never seen either of them again. She had spent three days locked in that room, before desperation and starvation drove her to break through. It had been a miracle that she had survived even a day after that, for the countryside was brimming with thieves and plunderers eager to make off with some gold from the destroyed town, but her close encounter with the great beast had given her certain abilities that had helped her stay alive in these tough times. On the day she had come out of the basement, she had dedicated herself, wholly and completely, to one thing: revenge. She would find the dragon, the dragon that had killed her family, and avenge them. Over the years she had mastered her powers, and learned more deadly arts, archery and swordsmanship, all centered around the admittedly difficult goal of finding and killing that single dragon.

Her arrangements on the forest’s edge were nothing short of perfect. She had spent most of the afternoon there, cool under the shadows of the trees, readying herself. She kept a pair of thick, shining steel daggers sheathed on either side of her waist. A longer, slim sword rested against the tree, good for practice perhaps, and for keeping bandits from her, but useless against a dragon. The daggers, on the other hand, were sharp enough and long enough to perhaps pierce a dragon’s hide. A weighted net, easily as heavy as the saddled horse kept by the trees, was for the next part of her plan. Once the dragon was grounded, she would have to keep it in place. But, if she was to get a chance to use any of her weaponry, she would have to first bring the huge beast down. For that purpose she had her pièce de résistance, a huge wooden crossbow, as long from one end to the other as she was tall, propped up on the ground and, already readied in the bow’s shaft, a long arrow made entirely of iron. The thing weighed a about as much as her sword and, if she was able to hit the beast at the right moment, she could take it down. She did have a few of these remarkable arrows, but it would take her a good few minutes to reload the huge bow, by which time the dragon would easily be able to fly away, or, worse, decide to set its sights on her. She would only get one shot.

Tensed, she sat by the crossbow, her fingers gently stroking the trigger, waiting. It would be much longer now.

SunDrop was different from most dragons. Unlike her name she preferred the darkest of night, the coldest of winds, the brightest of the stars and moon. She gazed at the celestial sky above her from her cave in the mountains. A surrounding it was the vast expanse of forest and a wide open plains where a village was built 5 years ago. Opening her golden wings she launched herself into the sky, moonlight glimmering on her white scales. Not the stealthiest of moments considering what would come for her. What lay mere minutes away.

Caitlyn continued to wait, lying on her stomach in the grass, ready for the dragon to fly past her, and for her to make her move. She had seen it before, when she’d been making her way into town the first time, a few days ago, but she hadn’t been ready to take on a dragon of her size on the fly like that. True, she was a smaller dragon, perhaps an adolescent, but she could still breath fire. This time, however, she was ready. It had to be tonight. If Caitlyn made her move and did not capture the dragon, the dragon would likely change her path, or move to a different mountain, hundreds if not thousands of miles away from her, and she’d be stuck trying to track down another dragon again.

She heard it before she saw it, the great leathery swoosh of wings far larger than Caitlyn flapping from behind the mountain. She resisted the urge to turn, to look up at dragon as it flew towards where her bow was aimed. If it flew past her as she looked up, she wouldn’t be able to take the shot. She only listened as the creature took off out of the cave it had lodged itself in.

SunDrop, being a Wind Dragon, loved the whoosh of wind under her wings. She leisurely swooped and glided through the starry sky her white and gold scales contrasting the blue, green, and purple nebulas above. Her sharp eyes caught sight of a lake below and decided she was up for a late night swim.

Caitlyn held her breath, listening to the flap of wings grow louder and louder as the dragon swooped around the mountain and made her way for where Caitlyn was waiting for her. She would have only a split second to make the shot.

The moment arrived only a second later, the dark silhouette of the dragon sailing through the heavens. She narrowed her eyes, zeroing in on the speeding dragon. It would have been a difficult shot to make, but she had been training for this exact shot. Aiming for the spot where the dragon’s wing met her body, she pulled the trigger, firing the heavy bolt skywards. Her goal was not to kill the dragon, but instead to cripple it, to ground it. Without even looking to see if the dragon had been hit, she turned, and, grabbing the net, she leapt on the horse. The shot was the hardest part of the catch to make, but the follow through would still be extremely difficult.

SunDrop just wanted a swim when a heavy metal arrow peirced her wing! To SunDrop's dismay it also hit her body, drawing blood and a good deal of pain. Roaring her dilema to the world, she clumsily fluttered to the ground. She landed near the lakes shores. Asessing the damage she made a noise of anguish. She would not be able to fly properly for weeks seeing as a good portion of her wing had been shreded

Riding full tilt across the plains, Caitlyn looked up just in time to spot the dragon falling out of the sky. She smiled, despite knowing full well that her job was only half over. The dragon was grounded, it was true, but it could still move, and she had no idea how fast this particular dragon could move on land. As she galloped, she heard the creature roar, a terrible, anguished roar that made Cailtyn feel a little sorry for it. Still, it’s pain at a shot to the wing surely was nothing compared to the years she had spent, alone in the world, because of her kind. Kicking her horse, she sped up, towards the lake.

In a few short minutes, she had arrived by the shores of the Lake. There, still standing against banks of the water stood the dragon. The horse gave an instinctive whinny of fear, but Caitlyn urged it on, her net ready. As the pair of them reached the dragon, she tossed the net over it and, a split second later, dove off the horse, burying a wooden stake into one end of the net. She hurried to the other side of the net, securing it as well. Held down by the heavy steel, the dragon was trapped. She gasped for breath, her arm sore from carrying the heavy net, and looked over her catch.

It was small, for a dragon, but still towered over her, its white and gold scales shining spectacularly in the sunset. Caitlyn sighed, drawing her twin daggers, and cautiously approached it.

SunDrop snarled coldly at her captor straining againrt the heavy net. Deciding she could'nt mucsle her way out of this she just let the net settle on her, lashing her tail furiously. Looking for means of escape she drew forth her flame scorching the stakes and throwing it off her with feiry determination to not die. (Haha dragon pun?)

Facing an increasingly angry dragon breathing fire at her, Caitlyn did perhaps the last thing anyone in her circumstances would do; she smiled. Speaking loudly and clearly, she addressed the dragon. She wasn’t entirely if it could speak, but she didn’t much mind.

“You’re not the first dragon I’ve met!” she said, her tone high and steady. “The last one gave me certain...abilities.” And, without another word she strode straight into the dragon’s fire. No human could stand the heat of dragonfire, the stakes had already burned away and the net was showing signs of being about to melt, but Caitlyn had been changed by her close interaction with the dragon. She had stumbled across a dragonscale the dragon that had sacked her city had left, and, upon touching it, she had been granted certain powers. Not being burned alive by dragonfire was perhaps the best of them. Striding over to the dragon, she drew her two daggers, showing them to SunDrop with a menacing grin.

“This is Roteronian Steel! More than enough to puncture even the oldest and most powerful dragon’s scales. Stop struggling, or I’ll gut you like a fish!” she twirled the blade masterfully in her hand.

SunDrop's expression quickly fell from anger to fear. She knew that metal like the woods she called home. A dragon as eye-catching as herself has attracted many hunters before. SunDrop reluctantly stood down waiting to see what would happen next and how she could get herseld out of this awful mess.

Caitlyn’s eyes narrowed. The dragon’s rage had dissipated, evidently her ploy with the fire and the daggers had worked. She smiled and, keeping herself within striking distance of SunDrop, backed away from her slowly.

“Good girl,” she cooed, less relaxing and more threatening. Caitlyn looked down the length of the dragon, and observed the place the arrow had lodged into her body. It had not been a perfect shot, she noted, the dragon was in significant pain in all likelihood. It was a wonder it’s rage had been cowed at all. “Oh...right.” Caitlyn needed the dragon alive, and, from where the arrow had lodged itself into her, it seemed that an infection was inevitable. She was going to have to take it out. “Listen to me. dragon. I’m going to try and take that arrow out of you. It...it’s going to hurt, a lot, but it’s the best thing to do...d you understand me?”

SunDrop at first hissed, flaring her wings defensively, wincing and contracting her injured wing. Hearing the girls offer she figured she could swallow her pride and let her help. After all, this choice could get her away from here. Very far, far away.

Caitlyn nodded. She needed this dragon to trust her. She had caught it, it was true, but it was not her goal. No, she had bigger, more dangerous game to catch. She reached out slowly, clutching at the long shaft lodged into the dragon’s body. It was dripping gently with her blood. Grimacing faintly, she took a deep breath.

“This is going to hurt.” she said, trying to keep her tone level. “But it’s the only way.” She was repeating herself, she realized, not to clarify to the dragon, but to stall for time. Steeling herself, she put her weight into the yank as she pulled down. It was surprisingly difficult, the dragon’s golden scales seemed to face inwards, slowing her progress but, after a few moments pulling, she had extracted the iron arrow from the dragon’s side.

Once the deed was done, SunDrop's side was less gleaming white and more blood red. A rather painful endeavor yes but SunDrop had to grit her teeth and deal with it. The ordeal had also left her a tad faint from blood loss most likely playing in Caitlyn's favor.
