(Reserved for Eve Rallon)

“Huh, well that looks like quite a storm.” Leif adjusted his attire, making sure that it held snug against his small frame. The Medicham’s feet clapped against the dirt road as his pack swung along his waist, containing many important things for his travels, ranging from little snacks to a small bottle used to gather water from fresh water. Being slightly shorter than the typical Medicham, he didn’t appear to be the most intimidating individual in the village that he had come from. However, no one doubted his abilities as a fighter and caster.

The storm in question had brewed up at quite a distance, with dark clouds twisting together and a noticeable flash of lightning springing out every few minutes. It illuminated the sky, even so far away it sent Leif flinching, especially when the dull sound of thunder came several minutes afterwards.

“The wind is blowing north, so I need not worry about that storm coming near.” Muttering this to himself, Leif slipped out a light snack from his pouch. Looking down at the moderately-sized piece of sweet bread, he gave a small nod of the head out of respect. For every meal, he did this, for every piece of food is a blessing where he came from. “Oh Arceus, thank you for this snack,” as he took a bite, he proceeded to walk once more, the mere thought of exploring the rest of the world filled him with determination.

A chuckle escaped him, taking another bite. This bread always reminded him of home. Even after almost a week away from the village he thought back of the time he spent there. His entire life had been spent there, constantly honing his skills with the village elders and poring over maps of the outside world that a few caravans gave in exchange for a place to stay and resting. It had been because of meeting these caravans and looking at the maps that filled Leif with a zealous curiosity. That had been the reason why he left.

“I hope there’s a city-state nearby. I don’t recall the map saying anything about nearby kingdoms. But I haven’t seen one for several days.” Eating the last of the bread, Leif sighed a bit to himself. Even though he had gone out for this adventure, the nagging words of the village elders came to his mind, scolding him for wanting to leave such a peaceful place. But how could someone like him remain there and be happy? It hadn’t bothered him until just now, but why? What had suddenly brought up that thought? Leif perked himself up, shaking the thought off of his shoulders for the time being. Now is not the time to make unnerving thoughts come to mind. Moving forward, he only kept his eyes set on one thing; to see all that the world had to offer.

The fields of the grass bent under the pressure of the cold front rushing forth, the wind mildly cooling the Fighting type’s body as they foreshadowed the leaving of the storms. Even though the dark clouds hovered over the thick forests blocking his view of the horizon, nature provided the traveler a clear omen that they will spread off out of his sight. Unless Leif put in the effort to chase it down, he would have little say as to whether or not he’d face the full wrath of the maelstrom.

Yet this would not be the sole issue that would come to Leif's mind, mere minutes passing before he could spot something heading his way, far closer to the man than the weather far off. Soon enough, clear in his sight and crossing the witch’s path would be a pair of wagons, the two large wheeled vehicles hauled along the untamed ground by a Zebstrika and a Rapidash. Sitting at the edge of one of the wagons would be a Lopunny, dangling his feet over and letting his bare feet run along the tall grass blades, staring ahead and not even really looking towards Leif even as they started to get within speaking distance. The other man among the three aforementioned would be a Jolteon, unconventionally positioned for a caravan: he laid on his belly, resting over the top of one of the wagons. A black cape draped over his back, fluttering lightly with the wind running over in a chaotic dance with the dark fabric.

Realizing that they were no longer on their own in terms of company, this Jolteon would be the first to display a true reaction; from the relaxed position he so thoroughly relished during the cloudy afternoon the canine shoots up onto all fours in a fluid push from his legs. He crosses his forelegs before leaping down to the ground and before the Medicham, head looking up towards the biped, hinds lowering to the ground as he sits on the rough patches of dirt, cape slowly lowering to follow, the turbulent air slowing its descent. With his neck more visible to the fellow acquaintance, Leif spots a glimmering necklace, tiny silver chains running around down to the man’s chest, the symbol of the golden wheel-cross that is known to be one of traits of Arceus’s distinctive body.

”Arceus’s blessings to you, traveler,” he greets as they meet, his gaze firm yet calm, eyes still onto the Medicham’s face, not wandering off to check his arms or weapons. His smile naturally grew upon his face as he patiently speaks, clearly not in a rush to move on as his halting caused the rest of the caravan to stop right behind him on cue, else they would have trampled one of their own.

“And Arceus’s blessing be upon you.” Raising a hand, Leif bowed lightly in response to the Jolteon’s greeting. He had been a bit surprised that someone had stopped to greet him, even more so that the entire caravan had stopped. The Medicham felt relieved that he had finally spoken to someone, considering that he had been alone for a few days now. Not even a single caravan had been seen until now, which appeared strange for the witch. Even in the village there would be a caravan at least twice a week trekking through the rugged terrain to get to the next kingdom.

Looking over the Jolteon, he took notice of the necklace that the man wore. Leif could recognize that symbol anywhere, and it proved to him that this Jolteon followed the righteous path. He gave off a small smile towards the electric-type, knowing that he had found some good company. He leaned to the left, taking a look at the caravan out of curiosity. The first thing that Leif could think of is that this caravan had been relatively small; normally he saw caravans consisting of many more merchants, almost like a sort of guild. So to see such a tiny one had come as a surprise to him. The Lopunny even appeared disinterested toward him, making it more bewildering to fathom that this Jolteon had been the only one to greet him.

With the cool breeze coming from behind, Leif clung to the poncho to keep it on him, chilled to the bone. Attempting to ignore the wind, he spoke to the Jolteon in a composed manner. “Where is this caravan heading to? If you’re going to the south, I just came from there,” he explained to them, wondering if they had ever been to his village before.

“Aye, south indeed,” the Jolteon confirms, glancing past the Medicham through the fields behind him, likely taking a look in the direction he and his companions intend to take. “We be trading destinations, then? Midnight Pass for Comet Forest? It is not the first I’ve had such crosses with others, especially since the canyons to the sides prove treacherous for any soul.”

“Even so, I advise caution along your journey north,” the man continues, looking back towards Leif, his gaze now grave as he frowns, the warnings he wishes to convey dampening his mood. “Evil spirits has taken hold of the forest as of late. Beasts of all sorts territorial beyond reason as if they’ve forgotten to respect another’s space. Violence commonplace, bloodshed audible through the woods. We’ve ourselves lost a wagon and a few men along the journey in those woods, but not solely from barbaric monsters. Some sort of stealth highwayman is also on the prowl, sniped a guard from the fellow brush and tore a hole in the back of our lost wagon. It has been a most unprofitable journey of regrets, but turning back at this point is folly.”

“You seem wise, despite walking alone. I trust you’ve the confidence in your travels, and though misfortune has followed me for the last few days, care for a prayer upon the drop of coin?” the Jolteon offers, his right forepaw rising up to clutch around the religious insignia dangling under his neck, painfully, one could imagine as the spikes of the symbol would dig into his paw pad. Never once did he dare take his eyes off of Leif’s face as he speaks in their encounter. “Either that, or some supplies for a lightly-equipped soul as yours. We have not made the full trip, so I believe the good master behind me is willing to settle for an unreasonable price, even with the deficiencies we’ve experienced thus far.”

“Yes, I am heading towards Comet Forest. I wish to get to the kingdom past there.” Leif had uttered this with a sort of sincerity in his tone, appreciating the information that the Jolteon had given him. Having been a new traveler, any information had been good information. At the mention of the warnings, and the loss of the caravan, Leif had his heartstrings pulled. Events like this weren’t uncommon with caravans, and he knew that pulling back towards their destination of origin is generally a dreadful idea to begin with. It left more time for the bandits and feral Pokemon to ravage the caravan, leaving nothing behind but corpses and broken dreams.

“I see. My condolences for those that passed away in the attack. I know what it is like to lose a fellow peer.” The Medicham lowered his head, his hand traveling towards his pack. He knew that he had no money to spare and would have to work a few odd jobs once he arrived at the kingdom; but at the very least he could offer some food. He could see the distraught in the Jolteon’s eyes, speaking of the benevolent lord Arceus being behind them. At this, he couldn’t help but smile a bit.

“I may not be able to offer any coin for your troubles. But would some sweet bread do? My mentor made a loaf for me before I departed from the village.” Taking the small loaf, which had been torn at the half mark, he easily separated a chunk of the bread and held it out towards the Jolteon. “If you desire anything more, I am afraid I can’t spare any more than this. Please accept my humble offer.”

“Nay, I could only be grateful for your selfless generosity,” the pious man returns, bowing his head down first. He takes the bread with both paws, turning to the side to place it on the side of the wagon for now. Having accepted the offering, the Jolteon goes to uphold his side of the bargain, standing on two as he lowers his head a second time, clasping the paws together, the significant piece of metal hanging under his neck now hovering between his arms.

“May the Lord, his ever mighty power and his wise guidance, favor the soul before me,” he calmly prays out in the open fields, volume all but hushed, yet the tone not strained to achieve the quiet dialogue. Almost like a coincidence, the northern wind picks up. The dark cape once resting against the back fur coat flutters, a buffer of moving air separating the two. “Grant him the gifts for his journey, for this man dares to brave the unknown before him. Judge him for his worth, and if the path that lies for him is blocked, aid him with the strength to walk. Hear my plea, and pass your worthy verdict to the pitiful vassals of this world. Amen.”

Finishing his clerical invocation, the priest opens his eyes and parts his paws from each other, ever so slowly as he gazes upon his own necklace. The golden miniature wheel slowly shifts in color to a pure white, as if beginning to burn up from an undetected source of energy. This progresses over the course of seconds, until it clearly was luminous, to which the Jolteon swiftly clamps it between his paws, suffocating the light it emitted. As if alive and defiant, wisps of the silkish hue erupts past the cracks, at first straight out before they all eventually curved in their flight heading straight for Leif. They wrap around the many limbs of his, ethereal bandages of foggy white, enigmatically fading out of sight.

The Jolteon lets go of his necklace, his cape returning to cover his back. A second. Two. He finally looks up, back to Leif once more, a wide smile towards the Medicham, pleased that he was deserving of such a successful prayer.

“I know not what gift the good Lord has granted you. May it be there for you in your darker times, kind sir.”

A warm sensation crawled up and down Leif’s spine, feeling as if a wave had come over him at that instant. When the necklace glimmered and flickered with the beautiful golden light, the Medicham’s eyes widened in awe, overwhelmed with the mere sight of such a spectacle. Indeed, a miracle seemed to have occurred. After the wind settled, with Leif’s gaze looking upon the Jolteon with the warmth leaving him, the chill returning to infiltrate his flesh.

Blinking, Leif wondered what he had felt at that moment. Looking at his hands, there had been no changes at all, a blank look upon his face. It had left him with questions, but he felt as if no matter what he had asked no answers would come to fruition. Turning his hand, he had established further that nothing had changed in the slightest. His shawl had settled down after fluttering in the sudden wind, and he seemed to beam.

“I am sure that whatever it is, the blessing is just what I need to get through this journey.” Lowering his head, Leif felt that he could have offered more to the Jolteon, but had none to spare. Suddenly, a question had come up in his mind. It had been related to what he had brought up earlier about the caravan being attacked.

“So tell me, if your caravan had been attacked earlier, could you tell me who the assailant had been? Or had it been too swift of an event to catch any details? I don’t mean to keep you guys waiting any longer, I just desire to know if I should keep an eye out.” Striding to the side, he jostled off of the path, the blades of grass pressing down onto the ground underneath his feet.

“The attacker attacked from a range for the most of the encounter,” the Jolteon explains, shaking his head to the inquire as he slowly returns to all four, ending up with his head lower than Leif’s. The necklace dangled down back to its original position, cape also now draped around the canine as he goes from the priest he demonstrated to be back to the appearance of a normal caravan traveler. However, the constant this Jolteon maintained would be his firm stare, intent on keeping eye contact for as much as possible.

“Aye, stayed away for the majority, the rascal did. However, he did near in for a moment once the spoils laid bare, as we decided to retreat posthaste on foreign territory. I kept to the back of the caravan, so I managed to glimpse a bit of his form. Petite, shorter than even I, a small form, maybe bipel, but I would have no way of being sure as he ensured concealment by cloak. Though the forearm sleeves to be high as he treated himself to what we have abandoned.”

The Jolteon turns, breaking his sight of Leif as he checks behind him, his head turned, looking up and over to the Lopunny calmly resting against the wall of the wagon. The quiet man had done barely any motions, though he clearly had been observing the two of them, albeit with hardly any interest in his expression. Supplying a quick nod of acknowledgement to that sitting traveler, the Electric type soon looks back at the Medicham.

“We shall carry on, the day not waiting for the likes of us, after all. Our fates will be revealed to the two of us in time; I apologize I could not warn you of anything more specific, but if the Lord believes in your destiny, then north you will reach. Shall our paths cross again, kind sir, I will be sure to repay the food you have so selflessly gave me.”

“Anything to help a fellow traveler in need.” Leif raised a hand and lowered his head in response to the Jolteon. “I thank you for the information, I will be sure to keep an eye out for the assailant.” The Medicham made a joyous grin, satisfied to know that he helped someone pull through hard times. Looking at the Lopunny, Leif couldn’t help but realize that the man hadn’t spoken a single word towards either of them during this exchange. It had been strange; if something like this happened in Neithüg a small commotion would have been caused. Did this kind of event occur frequently where he had come from, or is he merely adjusted from spending so much time with this electric-type?

Before he dared to travel any further, Leif formulated a question in his mind. Despite this minor exchange between the two of them, he hadn’t even inquired about one of the most common questions. “Before we depart for good, do you mind if we exchange names? My name is Leif. I hail from the village of Neithüg. Would you care to share your name?”

“Most know me as Oyr,” the priest introduces himself, pulling one of his forepaws back as he bows his head down out of respect. “Oyr, cleric and guard of the Svharon Province. May the legendaries smile upon your journey north. Farewell, Leif of Neithüg.”

Having given his goodbyes, the man named Oyr, returns his head back up, stepping away from Leif once as their conversation comes to a close. The Jolteon glances to the side to ensure where the nearest wagon is actually placed. Once confirmed, the canine pushes off his forepaws, resting his full body on his hindquarters. One hand rests on the wooden side. He grips tightly, and the mild crack of thunder rings around them, cape fluttering behind him as he shoots vertically up, peaking over his party. Body arched in the air, Oyr, lunges down with the gravity pulling on him, softly landing on all fours on the roof.

The horses started to move forward, the creeks of the burdened wheels starting up as they moved on south. They moved on south, past Leif, none of the four taking another look towards the Medicham. They slowly went across the hills, continuing the day without another regard to the passing traveler.

After the occurrence with the other Pokemon, Leif made his way to the north. His thoughts had kept bringing him back to the events that transpired. Not only back to the village, but also to what had happened with Oyr and the warmth during the illumination that the necklace exposed. All of this made him tremble with both anticipation and a hint of dread, even causing Leif to become a bit distraught. Leif composed himself after a moment of his entire body shivering, taking in deep breaths to find his center. What would come next? The thought alone made Leif keep his awareness up as he wandered into Comet Forest.

The storm had passed as he approached, a sense of wonder in his heart as he suspected that the perpetrator had still inhabited the seemingly tranquil forest. As the Medicham entered the forest, the first thing he had noticed had been a still fog that fell upon the region after the rain had gone. His feet trudged against the wet ground, making firm imprints on the dirt path as Leif meandered through the forest. The initial thing Leif noticed from his glances had been that the forest seemed too calm for having a caravan assailed not too long ago. The forest’s foliage seemed to darken everything, keeping all within its shroud hidden from prying eyes.

The ominous vibe in the forest had started to get to him. His concentration had been broken once the rustling of the bushes caught his attention. Leif quickly turned to face whoever had stumbled out of the foliage, seeing a small Buneary topple head over heels as they land on their rear. His palm had been extended up to shoulder level, making sure that he had been prepared for anything. However, once he had fully seen that the Buneary he let down his guard, having not anticipated that a Pokemon would have crossed his path. He had honestly anticipated something more menacing, but he didn’t allow the Buneary to get close as he stepped away. If a Pokemon had been attacking caravans, Leif wouldn’t allow himself to fall into that trap.

When the Buneary looked up at Leif, its eyes lit up as it saw him. At first, it had seemed to become curious towards the Medicham. Standing up, it beamed as it greeted Leif with a wave, pleased to see another fellow traveler in this forest. However, something had caused the Buneary to suddenly have its hair stand on end. Its eyes shrunk in response, feeling a terrible sensation come across it.

“Is there something the matter?” Leif stepped forward, tilting his head to the side as he started to slip a hand into the pouch. As soon as he did, the Buneary jolted back up to their feet and sprinted into the foliage. Leif raised a brow, looking into the darkness that the forest used to engulf the Buneary in its shroud. Stepping forward for one instant, he could faintly see the outline of the Buneary running away into the forest.

He lowered the flap from the pouch, clicking it back into place. Could it be that the Buneary sensed something in his pouch all this time? Is that even possible that it could feel the sensation of the enchantments? No normal Pokemon would be able to sense whatever his items carried. He grew concerned, starting to shiver once more. What if word had started to spread of this encounter because of the fact that he carried scrolls? Then again, how could they possibly tell if he had the scrolls or not? That sole fact alone made Leif grow frightened.

For once, he had been rattled, unable to return back to his tranquil state. Treading through the forest, his heart had begun to race, feeling his nerves starting to get the best of him. Every shadow crept up behind him; every branch made a creaking sound that frightened him to his very core. Taking in deep breaths in an effort to calm himself, Leif couldn’t help but think of how Comet Forest had been a deceptively calm name for such a terrifying forest. Not even the canyons of the mountains could match how Leif felt. In completely foreign territory, with only roughly drawn maps that are stuffed into his bag, Leif truly felt naked and alone in this new land.

Yet another traveler. A second one for the day, a rare event, a rare treat, such a rare treat. The beasts have been such fun to toy with, their feeble wills so pliable. Within the few days, the aggressive cretins that have originally reigned as the alphas around the woodlands now cower and dash about, fear dominating their very beings every second of their lives. They would attack and flee for their survival, such primitive instincts overwhelming anything else within their minds.

But even that has gone stale. Many of them have gone mad, but at this point, there is nothing new with these frantic vermins. Only a single train of thought for the pigs, nothing that now entertains him. Instead, with the time he spends within this forest, he desires fresh chaos. The initial terror that strikes the hearts of those who did not cling dearly onto life, the ghastly looks of those who realize that they could be ended at a moment’s notice, the cacophony of rapid heartbeats, unsteady breathing, cycling limbs. Yes. He craved those moments.

A second traveler. Another one for him to amuse himself, to pass the time as he resides within Comet Forest. He was not like the others that passed by moments ago; though they had fled at the start of his assault, they remained mostly composed, trying to avoid the fight and abscond from the woods as soon as they could. They were wise to enter into the open, to make sure that a further pursuit would no longer be in his favor.

However, this Medicham, the young man wandering through the forest trails clearly was at unease. A certain stiffness to his steps belied his anxiety. This target, wary of the threats around him… Yes. He will do.

A clawed hand gripping around the translucent icicle, he nears within firing range, staying to the lower thick branches of the trees. Several yards away, staying mostly out of view, with the numerous leaves and branches clouding most of the view between the two of them. Body hunched over, the arm slowly hinging back, one moment of confirmation was all it took before he snaps the arm forth, straightening out as the sharp short projectile whistles for a second, aimed right at the ground a few steps in front of Leif, the crafted weapon piercing any plant part that dared be in its way, their sacrifices slowing it down by mere iotas.

Leif’s anxiety had started to get the best of him. His feet trembled as he moved forward, the rigidity of his movements clear to all who had seen him. Looking about, he felt a sensation of being observed from a distance, but by whom? By the assailant? If it had been, where had they been all this time? He could feel chills running up and down his spine, perhaps ironically feeling as if an ice cube had slipped up and down.

The instant he had felt this the icicle pierced the ground just a few steps in front of his feet. Jumping a foot into the air, Leif seemed to shrink in response to the sudden attack. “G-Gah!” he proclaimed, his eyes darting back and forth as suddenly as the icicle spread its icy fingers along the surface of the forest path.

Shrinking slightly as it landed, the icicle had been angled in such a way that Leif took notice of how it must have traveled. His gaze returned to the point of origin, and Leif cried out, “W-Who goes there?! Show yourself!”

The petite perpetrator smirked at the response, his frosty hands consolidating the water vapors around into two more similar throwing sticks of ice. His actual visibility of Leif was poor, but it didn’t take much at all to see how much distress the warning strike caused. The shouts of surprise also attributed to the moment, the armed man developing a mild grin to himself.

That man dares to still yell out demands? Does he not understand his place, his situation? That’s quite fine with him, quite fine indeed. No, wait, that’s even better, because the terror has yet to truly start. What other reactions could be coaxed out of this poor soul? One of his claws dug into the weapon it wielded, the tension and anticipation starting to be too much. Hundreds of hunts, each one just as exciting as the others.

He leaps from his branch to the next tree as he nears his prey, casting forth the second strike as he goes airborne. This time, there was no intention to miss Leif, but the target was still low, flying almost straight towards the feet of the wanderer. If those were crippled, there would be no fight. There would only be a massacre.

Indeed, Leif had felt terror come across him. The Medicham had been frozen with fear, still keeping an eye out for whatever the individual had to throw at him, quite literally. For a moment, he held his breath, heart beating inside of his chest, galloping at an intense rate. Then, a strange occurrence had come across him.

He saw the icicles come forth, but it didn’t appear to be fully formed. Instead, it almost looked like a ghost of itself, as if the icicle had been merely a dream. His eyes carefully observed it as he saw the image fly directly towards his legs. What was this he had seen? Is it a vision? He had heard about some Pokemon having the power of foresight, but how could he have this? Leif had never trained in such a thing, so it had been baffling to say the least.

However, he used this to his advantage. Leaping out of the way, Leif saw the icicle come out of the foliage within several seconds. Where it would have pierced his flesh, it instead made a sinking sound as it struck the ground. Leif looked upon it with awe and amazement, shocked that he had a vision. But how would that be possible?

But now had not been the time to ponder upon this. Instead, he directed his attention towards the assailant. Whoever it had been, they were aiming at him with an intent to incapacitate, then kill him in cold blood. What a sick creature this one had been! Leif couldn’t wait to beat this Pokemon at their own game. Taking the opportunity that the vision had given him, Leif sprinted off towards the foliage on the opposite side of the clearing. He had hoped that, at the very least, they wouldn’t be able to hit him so accurately if he slipped into the shrubbery.
