xx "Trust in Me" - Covers
« Thread started on: Apr 16th, 2016, 6:15pm »

So, I'm sure most, if not all of us are aware that Scarlett Johansson has been confirmed to be singing our favorite snake's classical song, "Trust in Me". If you guys want it, I'll link it in this tread later on. Onto the actual purpose of this topic, did you guys know that there are other covers of this song? And yes I am talking about singers other than Susheela Raman and Selena Gomez who have covered the song. I know of at least 5 other lesser known artists who have covered this song in the past. How many are you guys currently familiar with?

I'll link up the covers later in the topic if you guys are interested in seeing/hearing them. I just thought I'd get a new topic started up to liven up the place a tad. ^^

(VERY SLIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD)

I've seen the movie recently, and yeah, she does sing it but not in the actual movie. She is really good at singing, lets just say that. :3

Good at singing? Well, she's okay but nothing really that impressive. I personally think they never should have cast Scarlett for the role. She probably just got the part because she's Jon Favreau's personal friend. But Sam Elliott will always be Kaa in my view.

Emiko, I would be interested in seeing what other covers you have found.

Kana, that's a pretty cool one. It's obvious she put a lot of effort into it.

It might a little off topic, but I found that Big Bad Voodoo Daddy (one of those swing revival bands) did a cover of "I Wanna be Just Like You". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qI93SMwwnE

Guess what I found the Trust in Me song.
Is it bad to say Selena Gomez does a better job?

I was able to find four different covers of Trust in Me on Youtube. Looking at the other song that appear beside this one on the different albums, I would almost think it was meant to be a love song... Weird if you stop to think about it... x-x

Anyway, the artists that cover this song include the Malek Andrea Band, Holly Cole Trio, Kaye tukerman, and Julie Lavender. I also know that two other bands/artists covered this including Two Jazz and Tina May. I can't find either of them though. They WERE on Spotify a couple of years ago and may still be there. Malek Andrea's cover is my favorite on THIS list while my all time favorite cover (that wasn't sung by Sterling Halloway) is a toss up between Susheela Raman, Selena Gomez, or yes, Scarlett Johansson. I rather enjoyed our newest addition to the list. I'd love to see which one is your favorite outside of the original.

Malek Andrea Band:

Kaye Tuckerman:

Holly Cole:

Julie Lavender:

I had no idea all these covers were out there! Thank you for sharing. I like Scarlett's, and I think the Julie Lavender cover you shared is great. It's very different, but has a nice mellow jazzy tone.

I've also seen a well-done instrumental cover done by the London Pops Orchestra:

Only version that works for me is Holly Cole's sad

I'll have to look up the other versions.

The more I listen to Holly Cole's version the more I really like it. I think the way she says "close your eyes" at 1:25 and 2:50 are my favorite.

That's how I currently am with Scarlett Johansson's cover of the song. I really liked it initially when I first heard it, but listening to it off and on for about a week now, I might say her cover is my favorite now. ^^

Scarlett's cover has DECIMATED pretty much all cover's of Trust In Me there has ever been....forever. What are you guys on about? It...is...fantastic!!!

Finally a version of the song that actually sounds like an homage to the original as well as re-inventing it for modern times. Mark Ronson did a spectacular job on this. This is also the very first time the track has been produced again by Disney itself since the original by Sterling Holloway. 50 long years! It's come full circle with a megaton blast!! And let's not forget sung "in character"....Scarlett is actually PLAYING Kaa after all.

All the others have been dreary piano jazz numbers. Are you seriously suggesting to me that vomit inducing, sugar coated pop one Selena Gomez did is *choke* better?!! Nuts! Absolutely nuts! Here we have a version that sounds actually snakey, sexy and hypnotic (thanks to those amazingly cool sound effects of chimes and swirls throughout). Ronson knew precisely what it should be again. The classic beat has also been restored with some enhancements.

Put simply a cinematic dream come true. Scarlett is known to have a nice singing voice but the inclusion of Trust In Me was by no means a forgone conclusion on this project for the longest time. The best it could have gotten was a single dialogue line reference as seen in the trailers. We've been given the ultimate gift from Ms Johansson and this alone allows me to forgive the short screen time. 1994's Jungle Book disaster this most certainly was not!

Let's not forget also the excellent orchestral versions of the song done by composer John Debney. There are two of them, found as separate tracks from the Johansson cover on the new soundtrack album (which I highly recommend). He basically took the classic Disney 1967 music and transformed it into a John Williams styled Indiana Jones and The Temple Of Doom magnum opus of excitement and scariness. This track in particular, "The Red Flower", practically blew me through the back wall of the theater. Here at 1:38, as Mowgli dashes through the dark jungle with stolen fire from the Man Village, a demonic choir belts out the theme to Trust In Me with such power. Ms Johansson may have had too little screen time.....but the lady sure got the best music by far!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPdQl7EKwBo

Don't get me wrong it's not bad I just like the sound of Selena's better maybe it's the music or the tune but I could fall asleep to Selena's version it's really nice to listen to.

You've got some really good points and I for one appreciate your in-depth review. That said, there's no right or wrong when it comes to music preference. Personally, I love piano jazz. There's a fine line between extolling the virtues of one cover or genre and criticizing the others...

... and I think you crossed it. sad Take out those parts, though, and I think you've got a good review.
