“Patience! Patience! By Arceus’s mercy, I’m not a scribe with a boundless memory for inquiries!” the Meganium intercepts his companion towards the end of this torrent, breaking into yet another boisterous set of laughs. Skan eventually lowers his head with a sigh, the rich enthusiasm of the accompanying young adult a bit too much even for a seasoned merchant as him. Though he wasn’t exasperated enough to stop paying attention around him, sneaking a glance to Leif in checking how the Medicham felt after being told to curb the enthusiasm. Regardless, Skan slows down his walking as he clears his throat, both unnecessary as he knew what he wanted to say, but any storyteller knows that the mood is just as important as the content.

“I don’t know much about how Hori Zona came to be. What I do know is that the source of its existence lied within the underground, a deep well that extended into a plentiful reserve of water. This along with a natural field of cultivation for wheat and that sort allowed them to cast bricks upon the dirt. For what its worth, it’s a great outpost linking the north and south, one developed in its culture and technology, but lacking in raw resources, the other a polar opposite for the most part. I don’t know how many centuries it’s been, but you can tell when you get closer that it’s certainly withstood both the test of time and hostile foes.

“As for its current status and demographic, there’s plenty to go with. Scores of scores of people, dozens of guilds, self-serving land if it wanted to be. But you also have the travelers and merchants, mucking up many roads.

“Oh, sorry to interrupt my own answer, but we’re actually nearing the gate. Could you spare your… magic possessions for a moment and pass them over to Veile?” the Meganium would request, his head tipped towards his clothed canine companion. The Mightyena in the meantime - upon hearing of her name and the suggestion Skan gave to Leif. “The guards won’t take kindly to your arts, so leave it to us for concealment until we get within the kingdom, mm?”

His eyes lit up with excitement as he listened to the history of Hori Zona. Leif took every ounce of information that he could process, relishing in such a story and what exactly had been comprising of the city’s inhabitants. The Medicham could feel his heart race in anticipation, the mere thought of entering the city, let alone seeing it, making him hold his breath in exhilaration. They walked along the road, his eyes gathering the sight of the massive fields that laid to their sides, never before seeing such a rich, fertile region of the world. The village of Neithug had been but a barren area tucked away in the corner of the mountains, where rarely plants grew. In order to even grow crops they had to secure a region at the base of the mountains where the crops were planted and harvested.

Finally, the gate had been approached. Leif had been too indulgent in his own thoughts to hide his pack, but this had changed when Veille spoke to him in a hushed voice. He remained silent, but understood, for even those who visited the village found themselves uneasy around the witches that resided in it. Slipping the pack open, he quietly moved the scrolls from said pack towards the Mightyena, hoping that the guards hadn’t noticed. “Just please give them back to me after we get in, I don’t feel safe without them,” he whispered to Veile, slowing down just a bit to make sure that no one would notice the scrolls that he carried in his hand.

Eyes glanced downwards before slowly straightening out, Veile’s head pointed right at Leif for the canine to stare at him in a moment of silence, paying less attention to the scrolls the witch held and more at his expression. Her stoic gaze holds firm as her left paw falls onto the offered goods, as if something about his obvious unease and fear had a deeper meaning for her, for the cloaked woman seemed to peer beyond just Leif’s own eyes. She does not give more than her steel looks, gripping the bundle of scrolls and taking them from Leif, the set tucked into the safe interiors of her cloak and out of sight. Her head drips at the gesture, the fringes of her ears getting visible to the Medicham and revealing a thick silver earring piercing the right, halfway between the base and the tip.

Having arranged the swap, Skan’s usual smile would only grow as he faces back onto the road, guiding his group to the entrance of the bold stone shell of the kingdom. The thick gate that would normally be blocking the arch-shape way in had been lifted to easily allow people to move in and out, after inspection of course. The four guards situated at this south entry of the encircled city took heed to the approaching group of the merchant and his fellow men. After exchanging but a few greeting words, the Meganium was the first to relinquish his pack. The Conkledurr would do the same soon enough, whereas the Gigalith simply let them walk over to check, as taking off his belongings would be too much hassle. Leif’s case was hardly one to note, for he had hardly anything when they checked, a fact that these guards found slightly suspicious, but not enough for them to question the Medhicam.

Having looked through everyone save for Veile, they would be charged an entrance fee based on the goods (paid for by Skan), and they would be allowed right on in, treading towards the main road of Hori Zona. It would be there that the South side of the kingdom was entirely visible, the myriad of people wandering about in the late morning along the streets and buildings. Because the land was a hill, stairs and sloped paths were plentiful, and about, even roads running horizontal to allow stands to remain propped up for sales. The castle at the top was still mildly out of sight, so the most impressive construct in the vicinity would be a cathedral, a towering monolith with even stained glass panes. Situated at the top of this religious building would be none other than its most important symbol standing tall on the roof, an iron statue of Arceus, half of it covered in rust due to its age.

“Let’s head to a tavern. Less people would see us hand you back your things,” Skan tells his guest, glancing back to make sure he’s alright with that.

Compliant with that request, Leif gave a mere nod to Skan, his heart pounding within his chest as he peered about at the beautiful architecture that the city had to offer. “Of course, if it’s true what people back home said about cities, it’s not safe for me to carry them out in the open,” he stated, more as a reminder to himself than anything else. The layout of the city seemed both open and limiting to the Medicham, who had to scurry almost directly behind the crowd as they led him through the city. His eyes lit up with enthusiasm as he saw the cathedral; such a massive building had been unknown to the naïve Pokemon, and it would not be the last thing to take his breath away.

His feet patted against the stone streets, taking in the sights of the city, before he saw a lone wooden sign swinging above an establishment, the morning sun revealing the letters that had been so carefully carved in. ‘The Green Chalice’ it had read. Leif had absolutely no clue what this had meant, but he saw Skan enter, so therefore it must have been the tavern that he had spoken about.

Stepping in, the first thing that Leif had noticed from the setting had been the amount of Pokemon huddled along tables. Despite the cramped setting, there had been so many, all taking swigs from various bottles of frothing beverages. All of the Pokemon seemed to be having a rather pleasant time, and Leif wondered how one could be so cheerful despite the smell of the tavern hitting him rather strongly in an instant.

“Skan, I thought you said that this tavern would be a bit empty,” Leif said worriedly, nudging the Meganium in a concerned manner.

“Worry not, my good sir,” the seasoned merchant asures Leif, his stubby arm moving out to the side as he bruhes the contact symbolizing the Medicham’s unease away. To add to his confidence, Skan’s obliviously cheerful face only grew more pronounced, grin reaching at the corners of his cheeks. “You will be safe here, as no one is brazen enough to question the activities of a bunh of drunks, nor will these drunks take notice of what anyone does. Besides, you need not think of the matter at all; we will make sure that what you originally have is properly returned to you. Just follow my lead for now, and you’ll see in a matter of time that I never meant to do you any wrong.”

Before Leif could further weigh in on the matter, the Meganium leads them ahead, deeper into the tavern, clearly heading towards the direction of specifically one person. Slouching against a wooden table by himself would be a Flygon, his gaze slack yet steady onto the surface as he observes the stationary scrolls laid out before himself. One was clearly a map of the surrounding land, another some text about history related to Hori Zona (made clear by multiple mentions of it). The dragon does not look up until Skan practically touches the table, the Flygon’s backpack shifting a bit in between his wings as he straightens up from his position. Only then was his underside more visible, a deep gash runing atop his chest showing all one of the near-death experiences he’s been through.

“Skan. You arrived earlier than I expected, and without a scratch too. Had you heard of the rumors plaguing the woods?”

“I have not, but I could fathom it’s nothing particularly pleasant. See, this here Medicham was found alongside the road bleeding his poor life out. It’s a miracle he survived at all,” Skan answers, crossing his arms as the rest of his companions caught up. The Flygon’s eyes shift to see this survivor, getting his first look at Leif. First look, and the witch could sworn for an instant that this Flygon displayed some hint of shock, but as to what he couldn’t determine as whatever it was, the motion must have either been fleeting, or it was some unexplained vibe Leif picked up. Regardless, the dragon slouches a bit, offering a lazy smile.

“That so? Pardon my sharp tongue, but I wouldn’t have bet on you being a survivor of whatever horror was in there. Many have died, ah, yes, since a few das ago, and people are starting to give up going beyond the south border of Hori Zona. How fortunate of you to be favored by Arceus and make it this way.

“Allow me to introduce myself, miracle being. I am Quan, vanguard scout of the Orralis Empire, messenger and eyes of His Majesty. I was sent here last week to run a few errands and check on the situation down South. What interesting timing that something like this happened. I was thinking of going to visit the forest myself, but if you have something good to tell me, I’m willing to part a bit of gold to be spared the trouble of seeing what forsaken disaster had befallen of that forest.”

Leif had followed Skan closely as they made their way through the tavern, always prudently observing the other Pokemon. While he had known of this thing called alcohol, back in the village it had been considered the nectar of the gods, as the ingredients needed to make it were difficult to come by. But here, it had been so prevalent! It amazed Leif at the mere quantity, even when the person at the counter seemed to pour more. How they could even afford such ingredients had been beyond him.

However, his gaze had quickly been followed up by the Flygon. He let off a small gasp, surprised to see such a being here. Leif had seen his master once take down a Flygon to create some scrolls, and so Leif knew of the power that they contained with their ability to manipulate the ground and sand around them. However, as he spoke, the Medicham became more at ease as he realized that this one seemed to be well-spoken. The way the Flygon’s eyes seemed to flicker as he saw Leif had made his heart sink within his chest, fearful that he also had the knowledge of what a witch’s eyes looked like.

When he had been spoken to, he looked at Skan first, who seemed to be appreciative of having the guest here before them. Stepping forward, his hand clutched his shawl almost immediately, a habit he always had when he had to introduce himself. The Medicham beamed and made a small nod of the head.

“My name is Leif. I hail from… somewhere to the south.” Looking back at the Flygon, he knew that witches weren’t welcome in most cities. He couldn’t risk divulging the location in case he decided to clear it out. “Regardless, I went into the forest yesterday. A caravan told me of the troubles, but I didn’t necessarily expect it to be too terrible.” Gulping, he took in a deep breath, finding himself becoming anxious at the mere thought of what had occurred. The pain, the maniacal way that the Sneasel handled everything, and most of all the word ‘Witch’ that escaped the ice-type so spitefully.

Visibly shaken, he continued to speak about his experience.

“W-Well, there was a Sneasel. He. He had strange powers, unlike what I have seen. I-If it hadn’t been for Skan saving me after I defeated the Sneasel, I would have surely died.”

There had been one thing that nagged Leif in the back of his mind about it, however. The power of teleportation. How could the Sneasel obtain such a thing? That power had usually been reserved for psychic-types, the physically frail ones especially. Either way, Leif had already decided to not divulge this information, in fear of possibly putting another witch at risk.

“A Sneasel with strange powers?” the Flygon echos back, perplexed at Leif’s description. This confusion further expressed itself as the dragon swivels his head to look towards Skan for confirmation or - at the very least - further insight on the matter. Unfortunately, the Meganium’s response was to shrug, seeing that the man had turned to him.

“I didn’t see anyone else but the lad. However, the clearing nearby the road was drenched with battle scars and blood. There was definitely a fight around. No pieces or even chips of metals for weapons though,” Skan recounts. “Though the place had a couple of puddles, so I gather it was a water or ice user. A Sneasel would make sense given those circumstances.”

The dragon mulls over the thought, something about the species clearly bothering him. He quickly shook his head, however, figuring he was just wasting their time for now. Claws grouping together over the table, he leans forward to face Leif, staring at the uneasy Medicham, his own gaze fairly neutral and carefree, having his curiosity sated for the moment.

“Well, at the very least, I can rest easy knowing that an evil has been relinquished from the forest. Defeating such a monster, given the rumors by yourself? I can’t help but be in awe at that,“ Quan confesses, a bright and gentle laugh slipping from his throat before he forcefully clears it. “My apologies. I see you’ve a mostly empty pack, and I don’t like seeing heroes running on empty. Here, consider it my treat.”

The barbed tail swings up his back as he opens the pack on him, the man reaching with his arm around into the his personal purse, sifting through whatever was inside for seconds before pulling out a small bag of coins, holding it right out in front towards the Medicham.

“Go ahead and get some medicine for yourself, Mister Leif; you’re in no state to travel as is for now,” he offers.
