As the Sneasel’s suspicions predicted, Leif had indeed found it hard to keep up the pace he had been strafing at. With the cuts and the amount of blood loss that he had sustained, the Medicham knew that the battle couldn’t last much longer, lest the fatigue overwhelm his being. That would be a scenario that Leif would not allow. He would win, if only to return back to his village once more.

Eyes fluttering, breaths miniscule, he watched the Sneasel pivot back and forth, watching his every move carefully. He expected the Sneasel to attack after he had raised his arm before, but he hesitated. Could it be that this ice-type expected him to move first? That would be insane; any heavy moving would result in more blood loss, in turn resulting in sluggish movements. No, he had to finish this.

Opening his pouch, Leif reached in and felt the parchments, meticulously placed so he knew which had been where. He gulped, knowing that he had one shot at this. Kill or be killed, that is what the battle had been reduced down to, the most basic element. The moment he grasped the parchment, he lunged forward, opening the scroll as he disappeared in a blink of an eye.

When Leif had reappeared, it had been directly in front of the Sneasel. As swift as he could muster, Leif utilized a tactic that he had come up with the help of his mentor. Using his move Psychic, he focused it around his hand, causing an unusual glow that would confuse those unfamiliar with it. Leif then used Force Palm, the psychic energy pushing the limb forward at a rapid pace than he could push at his normal rate.

Leif’s hand reaching into the pouch did not escape unnoticed by the Sneasel’s watching stare. That Moment was here, the time to draw blood, the end of the Medicham attempting to resist his fate. Drawing his claw up, he conjures the very thing that he made disappear, mist forming under Leif’s chin, swiftly aggregating into the icicle he threw just moments ago. Once fully materialized, the projectile resumes flying upward, none the wiser as to the fact it was relocated during its flight. Left to take off, it ascends, primed to impale its mark.

That is, had Leif not also pulled a trick of his own.

The hunter stares in surprise when he sees one of his own weapons merely pierce upwards into the entanglement of trees overhead, his prize all but vanished. He could not fathom what had happen. Or perhaps he simply refused to believe, refused to believe that the Medicham did what he could do, the shock of this reality enough to distract the Sneasel, his body slouching a tad forward, his grip on the other icicle slacking a tad.

As every seasoned man knows, reality hits hard, the Sneasel caught entirely off guard from Leif instantly appearing right before him. Even with his reflex, even with the explosive springing power within his deceptive thin legs, the ambushed man only reared his body back inches up into the air before the Force Palm manages to connect firmly at his right shoulder blade. It would take a few seconds for him to be launched into a tree, body flattening against it for an instant to bounce off harmlessly right afterwards.

The deafening sound of the strike and the crash against the tree muted out the audible bits of the damage done to the Sneasel’s body. He laid in the aftermath of the surprise attack, only his left hand supporting him slightly to help his face from being planted into the ground. Pain flared everywhere within him, his right shoulder dead, the arm attached to it completely useless, back traumatized. There was no way he could concentrate on his abilities with such a severe assortment of injuries. To think it truly was ended like this in one blow, for even his gift’s strength to be taken, that reflection made him aware of how foolish he was to consider himself invincible within the forest.

Breathing hurt. Yet his body insisted on inhaling metaphorical flares as his heart defiantly encourages him to keep at this fight, turned on its head in the worst way possible. He couldn’t even muster the willpower to look up. This very fact, once realized, made the Sneasel grit his teeth not out of agony, but frustration.

He had lost the fight, his pride, his dignity, his hope.

Leif witnessed the sheer shock that Sneasel had as he reappeared, then the way that his body flung through the air. Panting, seeing that finally the Sneasel had been incapacitated. The ice-type could only support himself with his single arm, and he appeared to be unable to do anything more than that. Looking down at the scroll that had been held in his hand, it curled up at the edges and started to turn into ash as if an invisible flame licked at it. When the scroll completely disappeared, all that had been left had been a pile of ash on the ground. At least his father would be proud to know that it had been used with great purpose.

Wobbling from his injuries, Leif took a few steps forward, the urge to run away from the Sneasel becoming all too great. However, despite the screams that had been heard in his mind, the Medicham proceeded forward. At a distance of several feet away, enough to keep out of range of the ice-type’s terrible claws, Leif noticed how the feather-like part on his head had been soaked in dried blood. The thought of this Pokemon slaying innocent traders, ones that had lives back at their homes, disgusted Leif to no end.

Crouching down to the Sneasel, Leif saw the agony in his eyes, not from the pain, but from the thought of losing to him. Making a cough, the Medicham finding himself curious suddenly, he had done something that defied common sense.

“So, Sneasel, what exactly did you do? How were you able to move that icicle when you shot it straight up?” Leif could feel his heart pounding inside of his chest, wary of the Sneasel in this moment of defeat. No Pokemon, feral or civilized, enjoyed defeat; that had been a truth that Leif had understood during his training. “It should have been impossible, yet somehow you managed to achieve it.” Beginning to tremble once more, Leif had a sensation of anxiety overwhelm him. It flooded him for that instant, limbs tingling and the trembling starting once more.

This started to vex the Sneasel. Vexing, quite vexing, how not only he had to suffer the loss in battle, but now he’d be questioned for information. What could this oaf before him ever understand of his own path, his upbringing, his values, his ideals, for that - be the fool’s intention or not - was what this irksome fighter requested. Curse it all. Curse Arceus for designing his fall before this insignificant -

Who was this Medicham exactly?

The Sneasel had slouched a bit closer to the ground, his only good arm not able to support his entire upper body for much longer. His eyes narrow as he glances up, able to get a view of Leif as the victorious man decides to spend his time crouching low. The pain started to numb, though that hardly quelled the internal fires within his disabled body. But it started to numb, allowing the Sneasel to focus a bit more. Nothing to the extent where he could manage to haul himself away, but perhaps still commit something in retaliation in spite of his limp body.

But first, the Medicham and the play he made to win. There were two possibilities that the Sneasel could imagine, and one he was absolutely sure could not be, unless betrayal was within The Family. The other, made far more sense, having spied Leif reached towards his pack before reality defied the Sneasel’s expectations. He reached this conclusion as he gazed hatefully at Leif. He accepted his own folly at this point, but for it to be before that sort of man didn’t sit well with the murderer.

“Move it?” the Sneasel rasps out, soon coughing and lowering his head as his body succumbs to the pain that followed from such a simple gesture. He wanted more time, at least to take Leif down with him, for he had already given up on himself. “Nay, I moved nothing.”

The Ice type fully collapses to the ground, arm having relinquished to the power of his weight. But he didn’t mind having his head rest on the dirt. He no longer had to look at Leif, having a general idea where the man stood. Just a bit more time, just give out the answer slowly as he could.

“Movement means nothing. Every place is the same place when you look hard enough. We only pretend so such that we can only fathom the concept of having more than one at the same spot. But everything is at the same spot,” the Sneasel cryptically answers. “When I cease to be, will I truly move out, liberated. You too, will understand that in due time… witch.”

The Sneasel hurls up from his esophagus, having prepared a special substance that he quickly transports with the remaining concentration he possessed. The air behind Leif would chill before glittering particles formed, swiftly transforming into a dark purple ooze as it falls down, aiming to make contact and seep into its victim through the man’s wounds.

The answer meant nothing to Leif at that moment; time was of the utmost importance. Never had Leif seen such a thing, and he would not let up until he got an answer. Hoping he could at least squeeze more precise information from the Sneasel, insulted at the term of witch used so spitefully, Leif took in a breath to raise his voice. The instant he did, fire erupted all over his skin, feeling the toxic ooze as it seeped into his system. Writhing in an intense pain, Leif had to regain his balance as he glared at the Sneasel. The serial killer wouldn’t go down alone, is that it? The thought of falling to a witch had despised him so much that this had been the last resort?

A few moments passed, and the fire spread from the open wounds and lacerations and throughout his body. The Medicham started to tremble, and he had realized what the Sneasel had done. “Y-You... Gah,” he managed to croak out, taking in a deep breath in an effort to ease himself from the pain. Leif felt the pain only manage to spread further, intensifying with each second that passed. He felt the desire to punish the Sneasel for this deed, but found himself treading a fine line between violence and the peace of mind that he had so desired.

A cough erupted from Leif, and he felt a sense of nausea and disorientation come over him, as if a sort of storm had washed over him. Stepping back, he felt a sensation of fear well up, afraid of the Sneasel putting up any more tricks before his demise. Not desiring to stick around to risk anything else, he turned his back and swiftly rushed through the foliage.

Opening his pouch, his hand had rammed itself into it, trying to find if he had any potions that he could utilize in this moment of desperation. Leif gulped, the tremors starting to become more violent, as he slowed his pace. His legs had become weak, and he gasped in shock as a realization came across him: he had used the potions several days prior after an incident with a Victreebell, both for easing wounds and detoxifying.

“D-Damn it!” Leif gasped out, mentally kicking himself for not allowing more preparations in case anything like this had happened. He sprinted once more, his vision blurred as he bumped into some of the foliage as he ran, desperate to get to the path. If he could get to the route that wound through the forest, he could request for help, follow the road either way; there had to be someone nearby to aid him.

As Leif burst through the foliage, heart racing and vision failing him, his limbs gave out. Collapsing onto the road, blood trickling down from his wounds ever so slightly, the Medicham gave into a coughing fit. His lungs burned, as did his throat, and the blood coursing through his veins only served to spread the venom further. Cringing and writhing, Leif had a single regret: he did not wish to die like a dog in the street. The thought alone made the Medicham want to cry in melancholy. This would not be how he would go, he had to continue onward.

Yet that did not occur. His movements slowed, and Leif blacked out. The burning pain took over his senses, sending him into a painful, endless sleep. Even in the darkness he could not blot out the pain.

“Aye, finally stirring, are we?”

Leif would slowly rise from his dark torturous slumber, the traveler waking up to find himself lying on his back instead. Leather hide of some bison Pokémon comforted his back, a thin yet noticeable layer of down supporting his underside. While the pain still lingered, he could feel that the fire that ran through his body in the past already burned out, the irritation now only skin deep. Instead of all of the ghastly reminders of his own mortality, Leif notices a Meganium, hovering over the young man, neck arching over as his large eyes peers at Leif’s face.

“Good to see that you’re finally up. Didn’t want to go try forcefully shaking you up,” the dinosaur continues, withdrawing his head to give the Medicham some more personal space. Doing so revealed the time of the day: early morning as the sunlight softly peered through the thick netting of the leaves that covered the area overhead.

Had Leif’s view attempted to follow to keep the Grass type, he would have to turn his head over to the side. The Medicham would find that this Meganium accompanied with three others, two armed men - Conkledurr and Gigalith - large packs and metal platings tied to their limbs. The fourth member also wore on additional garments, a fully concealing black cloak surrounding all of the quadruped, save for the gray and black-tipped muzzle poking out of the hood, hinting that the species was a Mightyena.

They had been all up, cleaning along the path, the group having clearly stayed over the night as indicated by a fireplace in the middle of the dirt trail. It had already been snuffed out now, minor food scraps and ashes left to be shoved to the side soon.

Leif heard the sound of Pokemon rustling around him, his limbs being more soothed after a night of recuperation. The blackness had receded, his eyes fluttering open as the morning light beamed onto the clearing. The Medicham’s first sight had been the Meganium looking down upon him, his eyes frightening Leif into sitting upright. Even at a slight angle, Leif winced and laid back upon the hide and down.

“Who are you?” Leif managed to make out, feeling the prickle of the remaining poison in his system. His gaze continued to observe the Meganium as he withdrew his head, overseeing the Medicham. Leif had gotten a good view of the accompanying Pokemon. The metal plates that had donned the Conkledurr and Gigalith glimmered in the sunlight, almost blinding Leif at that instant. He had never seen such an outfit in his life; the village had only light clothes to accompany the quick motions that witches utilized during combat. It had been such a drastic difference from what Leif had been used to.

However, when he caught sight of the Mightyena it had only piqued Leif’s interest. He had been a stark contrast from the well prepared Pokemon that had been making idle motions. The dark-type seemed to watch carefully, as if expecting something from Leif.

With a cough, Leif made a weak smile. “B-By the way, is there anything to eat and drink? I-I haven’t eaten anything for quite some time,” he managed to make out, trying to sit at an angle once more to get a better look at the others.

“Ahead of you, young sir,” the Meganium assures him, a pair of vines protruding from under the huge petals. They reached over to a small strap pack at his side. From there, he retrieved half a loaf of bread to extend it outward, offering it right before the Medicham, the modest piece of food hovering over inches from the Medicham to take. “We’ve no extra water to quench your thirst, but a stream lies parallel to the road a few minutes off. Go ahead and get a few gulps. We’ve your mat to pack up, so you’ve time.”

On cue with the explanation, the Gigalith slowly turns around with heavy steps, trudging over towards the two of them, plates clanking against his body as he moves. Staring over down at the Medicham sitting up on the bed, the rocky beast nods mildly towards Leif, not offering words with his sincere gaze. The Conkledurr also glimpses over towards the Medicham, also offering a minor salute to the man who got up. The cloaked canine on the other hand remained listless, calmly watching the road on both ends, head turning every so often as it checks their surroundings, but never actually making eye contact with Leif.

“That is fine, so long as I eat,” Leif said to the Meganium, feeling pleased to know that he had landed in good company. His hands, having the warmth beginning to flow once again to its fingers, grasped the bread as he took several bites. The loaf crumbled around the corners of his mouth as he bit into it, the Medicham not having full feeling in his limbs quite yet. However, it would suffice, surely it would return to him soon.

As he ate, Leif had several questions spring up into his mind. He chewed his bread thoroughly, thinking of which question to inquire towards them first. This group seemed like a fascinating one, especially since the Medicham had never expected to come across Pokemon such as these. They were massive, and Leif particularly took an interest in the Conkledurr and the Gigalith, both of them Pokemon that he had never seen before.

Leif swallowed down his bread, before setting it to the side. “Meganium, why are you, and the others, in this forest?” he inquired in a fragile sort of tone, his eyes looking upward at the canopies above. It seemed so surreal; had he truly been saved by a group of fellow travelers? That fight before all of this, the very fight that frightened him to the core of his being. He knew the Sneasel had been dead, but imagining that the event had gone by so quickly seemed so strange.

“And why did you help me?” That question alone had Leif curious. He didn’t remember closing the pouch before he collapsed; surely someone must have noticed the scrolls he carried. The forbidden magic that solely defined him as a witch. Even now, the way that the Sneasel had glared at him before he released his toxic, stating that term so filled with anger, hatred and aggression, filled Leif with a chill that he could never shake off.

“Quite inquisitive, aren’t you, good sir?” the Meganium prods back, mildly chuckling to himself temporarily prior to actually answering one of Leif’s questions. “We’re advancing north with a small set of goods to transport over from Death’s Cape to Hori Zona.”

Hori Zona, one of the metropolises of its time, was a name merchants were fond of speaking of, be it in a praiseworthy or scathing tone. Regardless of anyone’s opinions, the city out yonder past the upper border of Comet Forest noticeably sits tall and pretty. Literally, in fact; the stone-walled civilization had slowly rose from its elevated foundation on essentially a giant hill, its safety from exterior powers an attractive strength for people around. It was said amongst many under the Comet Forest, that a trek through the wall of trees lay a higher wall to riches.

“Mostly spoils from the many trades done along the way, but we also had quite the odd request to retrieve a particular herb native to the southern shore. No need to pipe up yet, good sir, just give me more time to explain,” the sole voice of this ragtag group goes on, almost no one twitching save for the occasional blink. Only the Mightyena continues to actively survey their surroundings from where she stood.

“I can’t give you specifics on the quest, due to client privacy, but it’s not exactly a most desirable plant. Took a while to stuff a good portion in a vial, I tell you. Of course, we’ve also neglected to stop by the village where I suspect you come from. Not that we’re superstitious about this sort of thing, nor do I approve of the things you do to craft your weapons, but let’s just say when you’ve been a merchant for as long as I, sins run deep everywhere anyhow, and we could only pray that the Lord overlooks it all when we rise to meet him.”

“Thusly!” he concludes, mouth curling up as he rears his head back, turning to look towards his companions, before back at Leif. “Why would we not assist a man lying in the middle of the road out cold? Truth be told, we looked through your pack for anything to pick up, and instead, we found pity. I hope you don’t mind us helping ourselves to such emotions, good sir.”

“I don’t mind?” Leif had to say this in a somewhat confused tone, since he couldn’t quite understand what the Meganium meant by allowing themselves to share the pity. His heart skipped a beat as he quickly touched the pack, his hands opening the flap as Leif made sure that everything had been there. The scrolls were there, untouched, and he made a sigh of relief. For that one instant, when the Meganium had said that they had searched through the pack, Leif grew worried that they stole the scrolls. Knowing that they were safe gave Leif a little more reason to trust this group of merchants.

After that initial shock, Leif had decided to press a little further with his questions. Finally managing to sit upright, his limbs finally allowing him to do so without toppling back down, he made a grin. “I won’t ask about the quest, nor will I ask on why you decided to avoid my home. But, could you please tell me more about Hori Zona? Which direction is it in? How big is it?” At this statement, Leif’s eyes seemed to beam with an incredible brightness. An eagerness had finally escaped Leif, someone who had normally kept his expressions in check when speaking with others from outside the village. “Is it really as big as the merchants said? How about a king? Queen?”

“Patience, patience!” the merchant quickly begs under the flurry of questions, forelimbs defensively up as he burst out into haughty laughter. Having calmed down and certain that Leif no longer continued to bombarded him with the details of the city up north, the Meganium clears his throat from the guffaws that seized him.

“Hori Zona is solely a stroll down the road, cutting through the forest and up to the walls. It’s monstrous wall surrounds at least half of the plateau, a city of cities, one would put it,” the traveller starts to explain. “Nothing as large as this very forest, mind you. But given all the tales that the merchants are likely still blown out of proportion, inflated exaggerations, I wouldn't trust the images they've painted for you.”

“Skan. Time,” a piercing notification of urgency breaks into the exposition, quiet in volume yet the hissing tone demanded attention. The Mightyena had raised her head, staring straight at the Meganium named Skan, her face awfully well kept and void of dust and dirt in spite of the lengthy trek she probably took. The Grass type nods in acknowledgement, smirking a bit before addressing Leif once more.

“You’re heading that way yourself, are you not? If you can get on two now, we’ll be glad to have a temporary companion to the castle. Conversation can be done while carrying ourselves to Hori Zona.”

Leif’s eyes beamed wildly towards this, breath drawn as he could feel himself tremble with excitement. He had to contain himself to answer properly. “I am heading there, and thank you for the offer.” With his legs finally feeling as if they had solidified, the Medicham stood up, still shaken from the toxins prior to this turn of events, and he took several steps forward from the resting spot. After regaining his balance and composure, he had come face to face with the Meganium, Skan.

He had to admit, he had never seen a Meganium before, so the grandeur of the flowers and the sheer size of him had surprised the Medicham at first. The packs that had been slung along Skan’s body appeared to signify, judging from the amount of satchels and carriers he had, that he had been quite physically strong. His gaze turned towards the others once more, realizing that he had never seen a Conkeldurr or a Gigalith this close. The feeling of awe and wonder had still bubbled up inside Leif, who had left the sheltered village, as even meeting new people made him encouraged to explore more. The only Pokemon that he had been familiar with in this group had been Mightyena, and not for the reasons one would initially think.

Returning his gaze towards the Meganium, Leif bowed lightly. “I will travel with you to Hori Zona, if you wish me to.” As he looked down, he noticed the shawl that he had worn torn up and having many scratches and holes from the prior fight. A look of shock came across Leif, and he immediately held part of the shawl in his hands. “U-Umm. T-There wouldn’t happen to be a tailor in Hori Zona, would there? This was my father’s work specifically for me,” Leif stated to Skan, hoping that his answer would be a more positive one.

“But of course!” Skan laughs in return, bursting into his joyous bellows once more, this occasion lasting nowhere near as long as the previous time. “Something as simple and necessary as tailoring will definitely found just about anywhere in the markets. By the legendaries, I believe there are even two guilds that concerns such trade. You need not be worried about having to ditch your precious clothing.”

“In any case, off we go, good sir.” Looking back towards his group, the Meganium silently makes confirmations one last time before facing Leif, encouraging to get him to move off of his resting spot so they could also pack up the small mat arranged for him. They took just a few minutes to restore the area in the path close to its original state, their work done mostly without words only out of some sort of unheard understanding as opposed to a distaste for communicating with each other. Be it from a set routine or something between them that they mutually shared outside of Leif’s knowledge, the whole process moved in meditative silence. They would check how Leif was doing before they all, bunched together in a group themselves, started to walk, leading the Medicham along, taking him out of Comet Forest.

Leaving the forest was akin to having venetian blinds pulled apart before his eyes, the monotonous mesh of mossy trunks and livid foliage torn to the sides of Leif’s vision. Breaking out into sight, fields of wild grass swayed in the gentle wind, droplets of water scattered across their ranks to mark the aftermath of the storm the Medicham spied on his walk prior to entering the forest. The verdant blades bent and tipped, as if pointing along the wide barren road that so contrastingly runs through, an ugly stripe of civilization interfering with the purity of the landscape.

Not till it continues to ascend, blurring into the sea of grass as it thins from Leif’s perspective, climbing up the hill before them and whittling itself down in the trek. The road almost vanishes to the horizon above, but at that point, it had reached another manmade landmark. Rivaling most of the boundary between land and sky, a dark gray barrier stood, its texture smooth thanks to the distance the Medicham was looking at it. This mostly-rectangular structure held two distinct features that broke itself apart from such a dull shape, as an arc in the middle represents an open pass to go through, the gates opened for travel in between, the top of the wall sporting columns for watch towers utilized by those on patrol.

And it was not there that one’s eyes could stop, for even above that lay massive buildings, almost shadowing over its own protective borders. The citadel's great structures huddled together, overcrowded as it would appear its defense has been outdated in size for quite the years by now. All this, each and every part, rose from the departure of the forest.

Leif’s eyes gazed upon the open fields, the luscious green grass flowing in the breeze that gathered from the hills to the North. The citadel that rested upon the hill made Leif’s jaw agape, in awe at the size of the city. Never had he seen of such a thing, having only heard of it from the merchants that wandered into his village from time to time. Even the stories that the merchants told him didn’t even compare to the marvel that he had laid witness to. It starkly contrasted the calm, serene setting that it had been situated upon, and yet it filled Leif with a sense of inspiration to continue on with his journey. Leaving Comet Forest behind them, the Medicham briskly walked alongside the Meganium, more and more questions coming to mind as his eyes had been glued to the city.

“This is such a big city, how long has it been here? I’ve heard stories about it, but other than what people have told me I never got the chance to discuss about the history,” the Medicham inquired with a sense of intrigue, feeling a taste in his mouth that only occurred when he became fascinated by a subject. “Or better yet, who rules the city? How does everything work there? How many Pokemon live there?” His eyes seemed to light up with the thought of a bustling city such as this, and he knew that Skan would have the answers that he sought after. His hand quickly placed itself within the satchel and he grasped the small gourd that he had hidden within the folds of the cloth carrier. Popping the cork off of the top, he took a few gulps of water before placing it back on. The fresh water satiated him so, and once he placed it back he asked several more questions. The curiosity that welled up seemed to only serve Leif a sense of nostalgia, as if he had turned back time to when he had been a young kid, asking his mentor on the many things that surrounded their village. Now, Skan took that role and Leif had become the student once more on a subject he had been very unfamiliar with.
